You are not alone, soldiers
Josh Knigge
Dear Soldiers,
Thank you. It takes an immense amount of courage to respond to the call of a nation. I speak as just one voice, echoing the prayers of a country in full-fledged support of you.
The United States flag is red for valor, white for purity and blue for vigilance, all representing the people of the greatest nation on the planet. That patch on your uniform — that backward patch that symbolizes your conviction to charging into the battlefield with 50 white stars unified on a blue field of perseverance. We charge with you.
I find it difficult to express my gratitude for all that you do for our home because words simply can’t do the emotion justice. I recite the Pledge of Allegiance every day alongside my classmates, never ceasing to forget the great sacrifice that you all have made, yet I still cannot fathom the enormity of that sacrifice’s reality. I can create images in my mind of the experiences you go through day after day. I play video games depicting the harshness of war; but I am still blind.
I don’t doubt that at times, if not most of the time, life overseas is rough on all of you. Occasionally, you may feel lonely despite the fact that you are surrounded by your brothers and sisters of the battlefield. I understand that it’s just not the same as back home.
This letter is the best I can do to remedy that ill, but I can also guarantee that each and every one of you reside in the minds of every grateful American on the face of the planet. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and the hard work that you constantly demonstrate will not go unrewarded. You’re all my heroes. I see a Captain America gleaming in each and every American soldier’s eyes. You make excellent role models for the youth of America and are a great reflection on those who have served before you.
You fight every day for the greatest prize that the world has ever known. America is the land of the free because of the brave.
We remember that freedom isn’t free. Thank you.
Always remembered.
Always loved.
Never forgotten.
Never alone.
Sincerely,
Josh Knigge

If you love our country's patriotic songs, if you fondly remember Kate Smith's incredible voice, then follow this link to read the story of the introduction of Irving Berlin's song "God Bless America". The story is followed by a video of this first performance (see if you can spot a very young future US president!).
